Here’s a snapshot of how your local Churchill Parish Council makes a difference in everyday life:
1. We Manage the Money Precept – That’s the slice of your Council Tax we receive from North Somerset Council, typically paid in April and September, and it’s our main income source.
Other Income – The Council also receives rent from the old doctor’s surgery, burial fees, wayleave payments from power firms, allotment rents for plots, interest earned, donations for use of our facilities and grants from North Somerset Council. £10,000 was received from a Community grant which the Parish Council applied for went towards solar panels at the Community Club last year,
2. We Budget and Account for Your Benefit
Our Finance committee looks at all areas we are responsible for and agrees a budget to include maintenance at play areas, allotments, open spaces and the community club. They also account for the day to day running of the council and plan for future projects. They prepare draft budgets and the final precept proposal. Meeting minutes and annual accounts (AGAR) are publicly available – everything is transparent.
3. We Oversee Local Planning
While North Somerset Council makes final decisions, we review all local planning applications and provide comments and feedback. It’s our way of doing our best for the village by sharing local knowledge to help planners consider applications. The Parish Council do all they can within their remit to help Churchill retain its character.
4. We Maintain and Improve Community Spaces
Sunny spots like the Ladymead Lane car park entrance, the Hand & Memorial Garden, cricket nets, Clock Tower railings, benches, playgrounds, allotments, recreation fields, and more fall under our remit We also care for heritage assets. For example, the Clock Tower is maintained by the Parish Council.
5. We Represent You on Local Issues
We engage with North Somerset Council, police, highways, environment teams, bus services, and neighbourhood watch. Whether it’s traffic calming or tree protection, we act as your official voice.
6. We Conserve and Promote the Local Environment
We manage allotments and green spaces, support and encourage biodiversity and help maintain Listed Buildings.
7. We Fund and Support Local Community Life
From play equipment to public benches, dog and litter bins, defibrillators, noticeboards, and we contribute toward a Community Support Worker. We gave grants to local groups like the Churchill and Langford Minibus Society.
Why It Matters
The Parish Council is YOUR first tier of government—the closest to the community. We manage everyday essentials: green spaces, planning input, local heritage, and community wellbeing.
Everything we do is funded by the tax payer, via the precept, grants, rent, and local fees, and we publish all our accounts for everyone to see.
