We have been sent information to share with you about Churchill junction traffic management changes – overnight works on Monday 3 August –
I wanted to make you aware of some upcoming changes to the traffic management arrangements at the A38 Churchill junction works.
On the night of Monday 3 August, between 8pm and 6am, our contractor will be decommissioning the existing traffic signals and installing an Urban 64 temporary traffic signal system, which will then operate at all times throughout the next phases of the scheme.
As the project progresses, managing traffic through the junction is becoming increasingly challenging. While we have successfully used the existing signal infrastructure to date, upcoming stages of the works are likely to result in increased queuing and delays unless we change our approach.
The Urban 64 signal system has been selected because it can better manage traffic flows during the remaining phases of construction. Without this change, a standard four-way temporary traffic signal arrangement would be required, which would have a considerably greater impact on traffic flow for a much longer period.
Our aim is to accept one night of increased disruption in order to avoid several weeks of more significant traffic impacts.
The works have been programmed to take place at the same time as the ongoing works on East Street, Banwell, when traffic flows through the junction are reduced. This will help minimise disruption to road users and the local community.
While the installation activities are not expected to generate significant noise, operatives will be working within the junction throughout the night, and residents and road users may notice increased activity during this period.
The contractor will have staff on site for the duration of the traffic management window, although the installation works themselves are not expected to take the entire night.
Following completion of the works, the dedicated southbound left-turn lane from the A38 onto Bath Road will be closed. However, southbound traffic will still be able to turn left onto Bath Road from the junction. Pedestrian routes through the area will remain open throughout the works.
